Comprehensive Eye Exam

An annual comprehensive eye exam is a thorough assessment of your eye health and vision. Regular eye exams are important for maintaining eye health, detecting vision problems early, and managing conditions that could affect your overall health. Serious health issues like diabetes and high blood pressure are often first detected during an eye exam.

What is included in a comprehensive eye exam?

Your optometrist will decide which tests are needed based on your medical history, but most comprehensive eye exams include:

  • Patient history to ask for any eye or vision problems you may be having and to go over any
    family history of eye diseases
  • Visual acuity to evaluate how clearly each eye is seeing
  • Preliminary tests to evaluate depth perception, color vision, eye muscle movements,
peripheral or side vision, and the way your pupils respond to light
  • Refraction to determine your exact eyeglass prescription
  • Slit lamp to check for common eye diseases and conditions
  • Tonometry to test for glaucoma
  • Ophthalmoscopy to examine the optic nerve, retina and blood vessels
  • Retinal photo screenings to test for diabetic retinopathy
