Why do I need to be dilated?
Dilation allows the doctor to see the entire inside of the eye during the exam. This is the best way to examine the retina.
Can I wear contact lenses if I have astigmatism?
Yes, both soft and rigid contact lenses can be worn even if you have astigmatism.
How often should I have my eyes examined?
We recommend yearly wellness exams. If you notice weakening vision or any other symptoms, you should be seen as soon as possible.
What is the difference between an ophthalmologist, optometrist and an optician?
Ophthalmologists are medical doctors that specialize in eye disease and perform surgery. Optometrists receive a doctor of optometry (OD) are health care professionals that care for patients’ eye health and vision. Optometrists prescribe and fit lenses to improve vision. They also diagnose and treat various eye diseases. Opticians assist patients in the selection and fitting of eyeglasses. Some opticians are also involved in the making of the eyeglasses.
Are there glasses that are best for someone who works on a computer all day?
Yes, there are computer no-line multifocals for the mature patients that are in bifocals. These are much more comfortable than the everyday progressive lenses. For our younger patients there are digital “relief” lenses that help the eyes focus on the screen. Both types of lenses can also be made to protect you from blue light emitted by the screen.
Why don’t you carry brand names?
At Style Optique, we specialize in offering frames that are unique, well-made and have a story to tell. We focus on eyewear designers that are inspired by architecture, nature and music. Some of the frame manufacturers we work with have been designing eyewear since the 1800’s. Some of our frames are even hand or custom made pieces.
Can I use my medical insurance for my eye exams?
If you come to see us because of a symptom that can be explained with a medical diagnosis, then we can bill your medical insurance. If you have an HMO, you will need to obtain a referral from your primary care physician before your exam.
I have cataracts, should I be seen by an ophthalmologist?
We manage cataracts until you need surgery, which could be years. We then counsel you on the selection of the best surgeon for your particular case.
Why do I need to have my contact lenses checked yearly?
Determining the health of your eyes requires us to view the contact lens on your eye each year. You may be seeing find and not notice an irritation but, using a microscope, doctors can see problems that have no symptoms. Some of these problems can lead to serious eye problems before they cause you any pain. Since contacts rest directly against your eye the risk for infection and serious disease is much higher for contact lens wearers than for non-wearers.
